Are banks still open? Here are the 2022 US bank holidays

Everything can get chaotic once a holiday weekend arrives. There are family gatherings, summer vacations, and ever-changing decorations. It can be easy to forget which bank days are closed. However, you don’t want this to impact your ability to access funds in your bank account.

We have included a list of holidays when banks close and alternatives to access cash if needed quickly.

What time are banks closed?

Federal holidays are the time when financial institutions close. Many have a holiday schedule on their websites to help you plan ahead.

There is a FAQ section for brick and mortar banks such as Bank of America or Wells Fargo. Other banks, such as TD Bank or Regions Bank have their own pages that provide information about holiday schedules. Brick-and-mortar banks may close all branches or change their hours during these holidays. Depending on the bank, customer service hours might vary.

Quick tip If a bank does not have a holiday calendar on its website, you can call your local branch to find out which holidays they observe.

Although online banks don’t usually have branch locations, you may still be affected. Transactions may be delayed if an online banking observes holidays.

Online banks generally offer the same customer service availability, with some exceptions. Capital One 360 provides customer service support for all holidays, except for the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and Christmas Day.

The Federal Reserve System holiday schedule is followed by most financial institutions. Here’s the holiday schedule for 2022.

*Note: The bank will remain open on Fridays if a holiday falls during the week. The bank will close on Mondays if the holiday falls on a Sunday.

Are bank holidays a good time to make transactions?

No matter if you bank online or offline, most banking transactions are not processed on bank holidays.

Ally Bank doesn’t allow you to make money-related transactions during federal holidays. The Chime online banking platform also offers a list of holidays that it cannot process direct deposits.

Transactions at brick and mortar banks such as Chase, Wells Fargo and Bank of America will not be processed until the following business day. When branches are open, business days are on weekdays.

Instead of relying on a slow direct deposit you might want to create a backup plan for if the transaction is delayed.

What are the best places to get cash when banks close?

Federal holidays are when branches are closed, but ATMs remain open. You can still withdraw cash from ATMs during holidays if you have a debit card or ATM card.

You can use your debit card to receive cashback in stores if there are no ATMs available. If your bank does not reimburse you, you won’t be required to pay an outside-of-network ATM fee.

What is the best way to cash a personal check when banks are closed?

There are several ways to get your money quickly if you receive a personal cheque during holidays.

If you have an emergency, you can cash your check at a bank.

While some ATMs allow you to cash out or deposit checks, you might need the funds in your account. You can make check transactions using the ATM network of your bank, but you may not be able to deposit checks using it. If that happens, you can cash out your check at an ATM.

This alternative is best for those who prefer having money in their account, but don’t mind waiting a few days.
