What is USB 3.0?

USB 3.0 is also known as SuperSpeed USB. It is the third generation in the Universal Serial Bus standard. It can transmit data at a maximum speed of 5 Gigabits per sec (Gbps). It is 10 times faster than USB 2.0. What is USB 3.0? And what is the difference between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0? This article will explain everything you need about USB 3.0 and how to determine if your device supports it.

Universal Serial Bus can be used to connect multiple types of devices. It is a collection of cables and connectors that can be used to connect many types of hardware to a computer, or any other device with computing power such as a tablet or smartphone.

You can connect USB devices to connect to a printer or tablet or desktop computer. For charging batteries, portable devices such as ebook readers and mobile phones can also use USB.

What is the Speed of USB 3.0?

USB 3.0 has a theoretical transfer speed 5 gigabytes per sec (Gbps). The theoretical transfer speed of USB 3.0 is 5 gigabytes per second (Gbps). This means that a 1.5GB HD movie can be transferred to another device in less than one second.

USB 3.0 transfers files at a much slower speed than theoretical. This is evident in real-world testing. A test by Macworld found that a 10GB file can transfer to a hard disk using USB 3.0 at 11.4.2 Mbps. This takes approximately 87 seconds, or about a minute-and-a-half. Although it may sound slow, this is actually 10 times faster that USB 2.0.

USB 2.0 vs 3.0

Tests in the real world have shown that USB 2.0 transfers files at a speed 35.4 Mbps (megabits/second). It would take approximately 282 seconds to transfer a file of 10GB. It would take approximately 87 seconds to transfer the same file using USB 3.0. This means that USB 3.0 transfers files 225% faster than USB 2.0.

A USB 3.0 connection can charge your devices more quickly. A USB 3.0 charger can provide almost twice the power of a USB 2.0 charger. A USB 2.0 charger is limited to 0.5 Amps. A USB 3.0 charger delivers around 0.9 A.

How do you tell if your USB is 3.0

It is easiest to determine if a USB port is 3.0 by looking at its color. To distinguish USB 3.0 from older standards, most manufacturers will use a blue colour. Sometimes, the initials SS (SuperSpeed) are printed on the cable near the port.

USB 3.0 uses a male connector, known as the plug, and a female connector, known as the receptacle (or port). There are currently four types of USB 3.0 connectors:

USB Type A

They look just like your regular USB connector. These look the same as any standard USB connector, with the exception of the fact that they are blue for the USB 3.0 version.

USB Type A

These are also known as USB 3.0 Standard-B and are typically used to print large documents.

USB Microa

These can be used to connect smartphones or other portable devices. They look like two pieces and are thin.

USB MicroB

These are similar to the USB Micro-A type with their thin, two-part design. These are compatible with Micro-A receptacles, and can also be used for small portable devices and smartphones.

Some adapters, cables and devices with older ports support might be compatible with USB3.0 receptacles. It depends on the connector type. For your convenience, please refer to the below guide:

  • Type-A connectors can be used with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 plugs.
  • Type-B connectors will not work with older Type B USB standards. These older standards, however, are compatible with USB 3.0 receptacles.
  • Micro-A, B and C are only compatible with USB 3.0 MicroAB receptacles. However, USB 2.0 Micro-A plugs can be used with USB 3.0 Micro-AB receptacles.

To ensure the fastest possible transmission rate, you should make sure that both devices are compatible with USB 3.0.

Recent years have seen the introduction of faster USB standards. 2013 saw the release of USB 3.1, its successor. USB 3.1, also known as SuperSpeed+ has a theoretical speed up to 10 Gbps. In September 2017, USB 3.2, the latest standard, was released. It can theoretically reach speeds of up to 20 Gbps.
