How to set up multi-room music on your Alexa speakers

You can group more than one Alexa speaker together to play music from all of them simultaneously. You can stereo pair your speakers to improve audio quality or set up Alexa speakers throughout your home to play music in all rooms. This article will show you how to set up multi-room music with your Alexa devices and how to get the most audio out of your speaker system.

Before you Begin:

Multi-room music can only be set up on Alexa speakers if they are all connected to the same WiFi network. If you are looking for information on how to change the network of your Alexa, check out our How to Connect Alexa to WiFi.

Set up Alexa to play music in multiple rooms

Open the Alexa app, and then tap Devices to set up multi-room audio. Next, tap the plus icon to select Mix Speakers > Multi-room music. Next, select which devices you want to sync and name your speaker group. Finally, tap Save.

  1. Launch the Alexa App on your Smartphone. You can also download it from either the Apple App Store, or the Google Play Store.
  2. Next, tap Devices. In the bottom-right corner, you’ll see an icon.
  3. Next tap the plus sign icon. It appears in the upper-right corner.
  4. Then select Combine Speakers. This will appear in the pop-up menu located at the bottom.
  5. Next, choose Multi-room music. Scroll down to select Home theater to pair Alexa speakers and smart TV. You can also choose Stereo pair/subwoofer to allow you to split your speakers into different audio channels, or add a subwoofer.
  6. Select the devices that you wish to group, then tap Next. A check mark will appear on the right side of the speaker to indicate that it is included in the multi-room group.
  7. Select a group name, or create one and click Next. Scroll to the bottom of this list to create your own name.

This group name will be used when Alexa asks for multi-room music. It should be easy to remember and easy for Alexa to understand.

Tap Devices in the Alexa app to edit or remove multi-room speaker groups. Scroll down to the bottom and choose your speaker group. To add or remove speakers, Unpair will remove them all, and Audio Synchronization Problems will help you troubleshoot issues with audio synchonization.

Although you can add Alexa speakers to multiple groups, you can only play music from one group at a time. Multi-room music is not possible with Bluetooth. You will need to connect your Alexa speakers and regular speakers using a standard 3.5mm audio cable.

How to play music on all your Alexa devices

After you have set up multi-room music on the Alexa App, you can now play music from all of your speakers by saying “Alexa”, such as “Alexa play Miles Davis downstairs” or “Alexa play classic rock everywhere”.

What Can You Listen To With Multi-Room Music

Alexa’s multiroom music works with all major streaming services including Spotify, Apple Music and Pandora. Audiobooks and podcasts can be listened to on Audible.

Your speakers will play Amazon Music songs if you don’t change the default music streaming provider in the Alexa App. You can ask Alexa to play music from another streaming service. You can ask Alexa to play the Bee Gees on Apple Music by saying “Alexa, play [group name]”.

You can ask Alexa to switch the default music streaming provider. We have step-by-step instructions on how you connect Spotify to Alexa, and how you can listen to Apple Music on Alexa.

How to improve your Alexa’s audio quality

Stereo pairing two Echo speakers from the same model can improve the sound quality. To adjust the audio quality of your Alexa speakers, you can use the Alexa Equalizer.

Stereo pairing can be done between Echo speakers. You can also separate the audio channels by using left and right. To enable stereo pairing, open the Alexa app and go to Devices. Tap the plus icon and choose Combine Speakers. Scroll down to select Stereo pair/subwoofer.

You can then choose which Echo devices to pair, and select which speaker will play. You should keep in mind that not all Echo devices can be used for stereo pairing.

You can pair Echo devices with the Alexa Equalizer to improve their audio quality. Launch your Alexa app and navigate to Settings > Device Settings. Next, choose a speaker by tapping the gear icon at the top-left. Next, choose Audio Settings.

Adjust the sound to your liking using the Midrange, Bass, and Treble sliders. Treble is for high-frequency sounds, while Bass refers only to low-frequency sounds. The vocal sounds are usually covered by the midrange. Repeat the process for each Alexa speaker.
