Is there an issue with the engine of the 2018 Chevy Malibu’s?

Yes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received numerous complaints from vehicle owners about the “Engine Power Reduced” warning light being illuminated while driving.

What are the problems that 2018 Chevy Malibu owners are facing?

Many complainants describe seeing the “Engine Power Reduced” warning light while driving. The vehicle will not drive faster than 20 mph if this happens. The car can crash at higher speeds by dropping to 20 mph, which is dangerous.

Chevy issued a TSB on August 2019, (NHTSA ID: 10177369), explaining that the issue was caused by an interruption in the “electrical link to one”.

“Replace the accelerator pedal position sensors on the vehicle.” The bulletin also advises dealers to “replace and repair the engine wire harness as necessary”

A Ohio owner:

“My daughter was driving, and the engine power has been reduced message appeared on her dashboard. It became clear that she could not travel more than 20 mph per hour. This is very dangerous.

Indiana’s owner filed a complaint to the NHTSA website.

I am driving, and suddenly my car “reduces its power” and won’t let me exceed 20 mph. Sometimes, it stops completely even when driving on the highway. It will not exceed 20 mph and shows “Reduced Engine Power”, even if it isn’t. It almost caused some accidents when my baby was in the backseat. This has happened many times.

Other NHTSA complaints

“I have had a decreased engine power for over two years. It is extremely dangerous, especially on the highway, to drive the car slowly. This issue has caused me to almost crash a few times. It turns off the car and then it switches off, but it stops working for me. This has been a constant problem and rendered my car useless. It is impossible to take it anywhere. This is heartless, and it’s painful. “It’s a waste of money to buy a car I can’t drive.”

“Vehicle slows down and loses power. Engine power reduced. Heads up display. This seems to take a lot of gas. I must pull over and turn off the car. Let it cool down for a while, then start the engine. Then get back on the road. This happened three times during my commute to work. It was also snowing in the morning, making it very slippery. This made it almost dangerous to be involved in an accident. Fortunately, it didn’t. This seems to happen more often in colder temperatures. However, it has also happened in summer but less often. This issue has been the subject of many complaints. This is a very concerning issue. “Very concerned.”
